SAVANNAH - Georgiann Thompson Space died on Friday, May 15, 2015, at Hospice House. Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was a graduate of The Pape School (now Savannah Country Day) in 1952. She was enrolled at Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri and she attended the Draughon’s School of Business, in Savannah.

Mrs. Space was a member of The Junior League’s, Inc. in Savannah and Charlotte, North Carolina, where she was an active volunteer for many years. She was a member of The Married Woman’s Card Club, and a member of The National and Savannah Horse Show Association, Inc. She was President of The Florence Crittenton Home for unwed mothers, serving for eight years. She was an active volunteer for The Davenport House, The American Cancer Society, also for The American and Georgia Lung Associations. She was on the educational committee of the YMCA and served as a board member of Bethesda Savannah, Inc., The YMCA, The Humane Society, The Little Theater, and The Davenport House.

Georgiann was employed by National Airlines in New York City at the eastside terminal and was promoted to manager of their Rockefeller Center Office. She also worked for the same airline in Savannah for three years.

Georgiann was an interior designer for Chatham House in Savannah and for Rite Way Upholstery in Statesboro, Georgia. Georgiann was hostess for an exclusive Savannah Restaurant, and was secretary in sales for United American Insurance Company for a local insurance broker. For many, many years she taught horseback riding at SA-HI Stables in Savannah and at Camp Illahee in Brevard, North Carolina.

Mrs. Space was a member of Saint John’s Episcopal Church for 28 years where she taught Sunday School, and was an active volunteer for Saint John’s Bazaar, and the Christ Church Historic Savannah, Inc. Tour of Homes.

Georgiann was a model for Fine’s, Inc., on Broughton Street, and she also did modeling for the Savannah and Georgia Hairdressers Associations, Inc. She was licensed as a substitute teacher in the Savannah Public School System.

In 1980, she changed her membership to Christ Church on Johnson Square. She served on their flower committee, decorating the church every Christmas with Betty Morris. She served on their Prayer Chain, The Prison Ministry, and The Housekeeping and Hospitality Committee. She was a longtime docent (Guild of Verges) was an Usher and oblation bearer, and very active as a volunteer for Emmaus House Christmas Breakfast. Regularly she drove the elder who could not drive to church every Sunday.

Georgiann trained young horses at The Chet Bonham Stables in Indianapolis, Indiana, and she founded The Thompson School of Equitation at the world renowned Miles Wright Stables in Charlotte, North Carolina.

During her provisional year in The Junior League of Savannah, Inc., she was hired as a professional secretary and President of The Savannah Horse Show Association, Inc.

Georgiann excelled as an accomplished horse woman, judge, synchronized swimmer, beautiful diver, among other sports. She was a recognized judge of The American Horse Show Associations, Inc. She judged horse shows all over the Southeast, as well as showing horses herself in Georgia, Florida, South and North Carolina. She qualified in two different divisions to show at The National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Mrs. Space is a communicant of Christ Church Anglican in Savannah, Georgia.

She is survived by a son, Julian Coakley Space and wife Rebecca, of Springfield, Georgia; a daughter, Austin Space Hall and husband Dennis O. Hall, Jr.; two grandchildren, Logan McGowan Hall and Katherine Penniman Hall, of Savannah; also, by many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Coakley Thompson.

There will be a memorial service at Christ Church Anglican at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, with The Reverend Marcus B. Robertson and The Reverend Steve A. Evans.

Interment will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery.

I first met Georgiann while driving for her mother, Miss Georgia. I can still remember the first visit to her condo. She had such a great sense of humor. I always looked forward to the visits to and from Georgiann because I knew she would put a smile on my face. My prayers are with her family.
